On the highways, road maintenance crews are gradually preparing for the winter season. According to the federal highway operator Autobahn GmbH, starting November 1, approximately 700 employees and 218 vehicles will be on standby for deployment in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The salt storage facilities, with a total capacity of about 48,000 metric tons, are well stocked. Capacity has been increased in recent years. Four years ago, there were still about 600 employees, 180 vehicles, and approximately 40,000 metric tons of salt. According to its own statements, Autobahn GmbH is now increasingly relying on a liquid salt solution. This could save up to 70 percent of the salt used in preventive spreading, according to a spokeswoman. Per square meter, the amount of salt used is roughly equivalent to three teaspoons.
