The announcement by solar manufacturer Meyer Burger that it is preparing to close a large plant in Saxony is "an alarming signal" for Germany as a business location, according to State Minister for Economic Affairs Martin Dulig. "If the company really does end production in Saxony, this would be a serious blow for the local solar industry and for the whole of Europe," said the SPD politician on Friday.
The federal government now has just a few days to create the right framework conditions to make the production of solar modules economically viable again in Germany. The federal government held out the prospect of measures last year. These must be implemented immediately. If this does not happen, Germany will also become dependent in this area, especially on China.
Meyer Burger had announced that it was preparing to close its plant in Freiberg. Around 500 jobs are at stake.
