Consumers in Saxony can expect a slight reduction in gas network fees. However, this benefit is completely offset elsewhere.

Contrary to the nationwide trend, households in Saxony can expect a slight reduction in energy costs at the turn of the year—at least when it comes to grid fees. For gas, these costs are falling slightly, while for electricity they remain virtually unchanged. This is according to current calculations by the comparison portal Verivox based on data published so far by distribution network operators. However, the portal also anticipates a sharp rise in the cost of gas itself.

Gas network costs to drop by about five euros

According to these figures, gas network fees in Saxony will decrease by about five euros gross, or 0.7 percent, to 741 euros in 2027. However, the level in Saxony is already significantly higher than the national average of 634 euros. Nationwide, Verivox anticipates an increase of about three percent, or 19 euros gross, annually. The figures are calculated for a family living in a single-family home with a gas consumption of 20,000 kilowatt-hours. Grid fees account for about one-fifth of the gas price and one-quarter of the electricity price.

Electricity grid fees remain stable

Annual electricity grid fees in Saxony will remain stable at 408 euros at the turn of the year. Nationwide, however, they will rise by 1.9 percent from an average of 428 euros to 436 euros gross. A three-person household with an annual electricity consumption of 4,000 kilowatt-hours will therefore face an additional cost of eight euros.

The comparison portal reported that the amount of the grid fees depends, among other things, on the costs of expanding and operating the regional power grids. In addition, the declining federal subsidy for transmission grid costs is having an impact. While the federal government had allocated 6.5 billion euros from the Climate and Transformation Fund in 2026, only 5.525 billion euros are earmarked for 2027.

Significant Gas Price Increases on the Horizon

Meanwhile, wholesale gas prices—which have risen sharply since the start of the war in Iran—are putting significant pressure on prices. “We expect widespread price increases at the turn of the year, as gas suppliers pass on the higher procurement costs to their customers. Depending on the current rate plan, these increases will range between 10 and 20 percent. Anyone heating a single-family home should expect additional costs of up to 500 euros,” explained energy expert Thorsten Storck.
