A police officer was injured during a traffic stop in Leipzig when a driver fled. A shot was fired - it is still unclear how this happened.

A police officer has been injured during a traffic stop in the east of Leipzig. The officer wanted to carry out a routine check on a car on Hermann-Liebmann-Straße at around midday on Tuesday, a police spokesperson said when asked. The driver then suddenly drove off. The officer was hit and dragged along for some distance, a police spokesman said. As a result, a shot was fired from the 41-year-old's service weapon.

How this happened is still under investigation. According to the spokesperson, no one was injured by the shots fired. The car was later found empty in a cross street not far from the checkpoint. The driver fled the scene. Several media outlets had previously reported.
