The house sparrow is the most frequently sighted bird species in Saxony. This is the result of the bird counts in the "Hour of the Garden Birds" project of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Nabu). Starling, great tit and blackbird follow in second place.
Despite the top position, there is cause for concern for the house sparrow, also known as the sparrow: it is ten percent below the previous year's figure. For the tree sparrow it is twelve percent less. The lapwing was only sighted once in the whole of Saxony. The bird of the year, the partridge, was reportedly not seen at all. On the other hand, the stable figures for blackbirds and finches were positive.
In Saxony, around 3,000 people counted more than 65,000 birds in their gardens between 8 and 10 May. The nationwide project took place for the 22nd time this year. The house sparrow is also the most frequently sighted bird in Germany.
