With their unusually long necks, giraffes are among the stars of the zoo. The herd in Leipzig has grown again.

The herd of giraffes at Leipzig Zoo has a new addition: Five-year-old Tamika has given birth to a female cub, the zoo announced. The mother had mastered the birth excellently and the cub had taken its first important steps in life with flying colors. The two are in the process of getting used to each other and building a close relationship before they go into the herd and the area visible to visitors in the coming days.

The gestation period of Rothschild's giraffes lasts around 14 months. At Leipzig Zoo, the giraffes live together with other animal species such as zebras, gazelles and antelopes in the Kiwara savannah.
