The Serkowitz Volksoper kicks off 2026 with a turbulent summer production in Dresden: "Es geht um die Wurst" combines Mozart, fairground chaos, humor and jazz.

With "Es geht um die Wurst - Eine turbulente Verführung frei nach Mozart", the Serkowitz Volksoper is bringing its new summer theater production to the stage of the Saloppe Dresden from 15 June 2026. The production will once again be directed by Clemens Kersten, who was responsible for the production last year. The play will be performed on the Saloppe's circus wagon stage, with a total of twelve performances planned until mid-September. Advance sales have already begun.

The new play centers around a bratwurst stand at a fair - and a chaos that quickly takes on much larger proportions. A family man gets into criminal entanglements, representatives of different religions lose their faith among drinkers of all people, and Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" threatens to fail on the stage opposite. Only a trio of jugglers brings movement to the muddled situation. As is so often the case with the Serkowitz folk opera, the piece combines humor, musical playfulness and satirical points with a clear reference to the present day.

The libretto is once again by Wolf-Dieter Gööck. Musically, Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" serves as the starting point for an unconventional arrangement by Volksoper co-founder Milko Kersten. This time, influences from jazz greats such as Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson are also incorporated. According to the announcement, the result is a German-American operatic melange between a classical template and improvisational lightness.

The ensemble includes two familiar faces from the Volksoper, Dorothea Wagner and Cornelius Uhle. Soprano Fanny Lamers, who studied at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden and is currently continuing her training at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, is a new addition. The singers will be accompanied by the three-piece minimalist orchestra "Musi nad Labem" under the direction of Michael Schütze.

The premiere is on June 15, 2026 and the performance will run until September 16. Tickets are available online at Serkowice Volksoper and at advance booking offices with Etix access.
