1. FC Lok Leipzig have once again secured the championship in the North-East Regional Football League and can therefore make it into the 3rd division via the long-disputed promotion relegation. On the final matchday, the Saxons defeated 1. FC Magdeburg II 5:2 (0:1). FC Carl Zeiss Jena, who were level on points, won the Thuringia derby against FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt 2:0 (2:0) and only missed out on the championship due to their goal difference being five goals worse.
The relegation play-off will decide whether Leipzig make it to the 3rd division at the third attempt. Coach Jochen Seitz's team will face Würzburger Kickers, who won their last match at SpVgg Ansbach 4:1 (2:1) to finish second in the Bavarian regional league. 1. FC Nürnberg II, who finished ahead of the Würzburgers, had previously declared that they would not be promoted.
Lok Leipzig failed to win relegation in 2020 against SC Verl and last year against TSV Havelse. The matches against the Kickers will be played on May 28 in Leipzig and on June 1 in Würzburg, both starting at 7 p.m. (MagentaSport).
