Assan Ouedraogo is replacing the injured Lennart Karl on the World Cup roster. At the DFB headquarters in Winston-Salem, the 20-year-old from Leipzig made a great debut—on the press podium.

It’s been a long time since a national team player made such a funny, open, and likable debut on the German Football Association’s press podium as youngster Assan Ouedraego. The 20-year-old had the crowd laughing repeatedly during the joint press conference with his Leipzig teammate David Raum in Winston-Salem.

For instance, when he recounted the phone call from national team coach Julian Nagelsmann that caught him while he was on vacation in Marbella. “I was lying on a lounge chair—just chilling with my friends. Then the call came. It went from zero to 180 in an instant. I ran around the corner so no one would hear me. Then he told me he’d like to add me to the squad. I was immediately incredibly happy,” Ouedraogo said—and added dryly: “Then he asked me if I was drunk? But I don’t drink anyway.”

Nominated as a replacement for Lennart Karl

Ouedraogo stepped in last Friday for Bayern youngster Lennart Karl, who had been injured in Chicago ahead of the World Cup dress rehearsal against the U.S. There had been no exchange with the 18-year-old Karl. “To be honest, we’ve never actually crossed paths. We don’t really know each other. The one time he was with the U21s, I wasn’t there. And when I was there, he wasn’t there. Then he was here, and I wasn’t there. I was here, and he wasn’t there,” said the attacking midfielder, who made his senior team debut in November 2025.

In the 6-0 World Cup qualifier against Slovakia in Leipzig, he promptly scored his first international goal after coming on as a late substitute. At the World Cup, he now wants to showcase his strengths not only on the DFB podium but also, if possible, on the field during the matches. Speaking about his strengths, Ouedraogo said: “I’d describe myself as unpredictable—freestyle. One of my strengths is dribbling.”

He watched almost all the World Cup matches while on vacation

Ouedraogo quickly left Spain after Nagelsmann’s call, picked up his soccer cleats at home, and then flew to North Carolina. He even arrived at the DFB headquarters a day before the rest of the DFB contingent. “Until the team arrived, it was definitely very boring on the huge grounds,” Ouedraogo revealed. He’s really looking forward to the World Cup—and to every single match.

If he had stayed on vacation, he would probably have sat in front of the TV day and night. “I would have watched almost every single one,” Ouedraogo said of the XXL tournament featuring 48 teams and a total of 104 matches.
