Jürgen Klopp is the head of Red Bull Soccer and was involved in RB Leipzig's decision to part ways with coach Ole Werner. He credits the coach with doing a "great job." But that wasn't enough.

Jürgen Klopp defended Bundesliga club RB Leipzig’s decision to part ways with head coach Ole Werner. “Ole did a great job. We qualified for the Champions League. But at the same time, we have to look ahead,” the 59-year-old said on MagentaTV ahead of England’s World Cup match against Croatia in Dallas.

“We then thought about what that might look like given the workload ahead of us. Then the decision was made in Leipzig to make the change,” said Klopp.

The former successful coach is Global Sports Director at Red Bull Soccer and is also working as an expert for the streaming service MagentaTV during the World Cup in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. “We’re acting in an advisory capacity as a global team. We were involved in the decision-making process. We analyzed the season,” he said.

Despite qualifying for the Champions League, there were doubts about Werner

Just a few hours earlier, RB Leipzig had announced that it was parting ways with Werner after only one year. The former coach of SV Werder Bremen and Holstein Kiel had led the team from Saxony to third place in the standings and into the Champions League.

Werner still has a contract in Leipzig through 2027. A successor is expected to be announced shortly. Assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann are also leaving.

Klopp declines to comment on potential successor Demichelis

According to consistent media reports, the Argentine Martín Demichelis is set to become his successor. The 45-year-old former Bayern Munich defender was previously the coach of RCD Mallorca. Klopp declined to comment on the name. “I’m not going to get involved in speculation right now. Anything there is to say on the matter will come from Leipzig.”

Dissatisfaction with Werner is said to have been particularly evident among Supervisory Board Chairman Oliver Mintzlaff and the global soccer department led by Klopp and former national team player Mario Gomez. The new playing style implemented by Werner failed to win them over, and RB reportedly needed too much luck to qualify for the Champions League.
