The German gymnasts around young star Helen Kevric have surprisingly won the silver medal at the European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig. The 17-year-old from Stuttgart, together with Karina Schönmaier, Lea Marie Quaas (both Chemnitz), Silja Stöhr (Heddesheim) and Janoah Müller (Haßloch), scored 158.396 points in the four-event qualifying competition, which was also held as a team event to kick off the home title fights.
As in the previous year, Italy secured the title with 161.930 points. France came third with 156.728 points. The German team of Kim Bui, Elisabeth Seitz, Emma Malewski, Sarah Voss and Pauline Schäfer-Betz won bronze at the last European Championships in Munich in 2022.
Kevric and Schönmaier in a total of five finals
Kevric, who finished eighth in the all-around and sixth on the uneven bars at last year's Olympics in Paris, also reached the all-around final and the medal decision on the uneven bars. On her special apparatus, she was the best in the elimination round with 14.766 points and can justifiably hope for gold. Kevric was 0.366 points ahead of second-placed Nina Derwael from Belgium. She finished third in the all-around with 53.932 points.
Karina Schönmaier qualified for the final as the best with an average score of 13.833 points for two vaults, sixth in the floor exercise with 13.200 points and eighth in the all-around with 52.032 points.
