Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme stood against the historic backdrop of the Brandenburg Gate and gave German cycling fans hope for a 2029 Grand Départ in eastern Germany. The 65-year-old emphasized the symbolic significance that a start of the world’s largest cycling race in Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia would carry 40 years after the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
“This is such an important anniversary for the Germans. But also for all of Europe and beyond, for all people who believe in freedom,” he said in front of the Brandenburg Gate. As a gift, the Tour organizers received a small and a large piece of the Berlin Wall.
The bid was initiated and developed by the Grand Départ Allemagne association in collaboration with the states of Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The German Cycling Federation submitted it as the official sponsor.
