There is a scandal in the top match of the 2nd Bundesliga. Fans storm into the stadium and throw pyrotechnics back and forth. Dynamo apologizes and announces an investigation.

The incidents at the second division top match between Dynamo Dresden are a huge setback in the fight to preserve fan culture and stadium safety. "Our home matches are known for their unique atmosphere. Images like the ones we saw tonight are unacceptable and do massive damage not only to our club, but to soccer as a whole in Germany," said Dynamo's managing director Stephan Zimmermann in a club statement after the 0:1 against Hertha BSC.

Zimmermann explained that he and numerous other clubs have been lobbying politicians "for months for fan interests and a safe stadium experience". "Scenes like this are an absolute slap in the face," he emphasized. Already during the match, which was interrupted twice, the Dynamo officials spoke with the leading police officers "to exchange initial findings in a communicative manner. These perceptions and observations are now part of the fundamental reappraisal," the statement read.

"My sincerest apologies to all those not involved"

At the top match under floodlights, pyrotechnics were initially set off by both fan camps. Afterwards, supporters of both teams climbed over the fences. Dresden supporters ran along the pitch to the Hertha fan block wearing masks. This led to a brief clash between the two fan groups, during which pyrotechnics were used as projectiles. Referee Sven Jablonski had to interrupt the second division match a second time and sent the teams to the dressing room after the riots. Police officers then forced the Dynamo supporters back into their block. A Hertha flag was burnt down there.

"We must and will evaluate this evening in detail and would like to apologize in the highest form to all those not involved who were drawn into such unnecessary actions," said Zimmermann. Dynamo head coach Thomas Stamm was visibly disappointed by the incidents.

Especially because the spectators in the stadium commemorated the deceased honorary captain Hans-Jürgen Kreische with dignity and full respect. "Sport should have been in the foreground today, but in my opinion it wasn't and even worse that when you see the opening phase with a minute of mourning, with a lot of respect from the Hertha fans - nobody made a sound - then unfortunately other things come to the fore afterwards that have no place in soccer," said Stamm at the press conference.
