In extreme heat, it's recommended to avoid direct sunlight and seek out cooler indoor spaces. But what can someone do if they don't have a place to live?

Exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration: The current summer heat poses significant risks to homeless people. To help, emergency shelters in some cities are currently open around the clock as safe havens, according to a survey by the German Press Agency. There are also day centers where drinks and meals are provided. But citizens are also being called upon to be especially vigilant and to help homeless people.

Appeal to Citizens: Offer Help Instead of Looking Away

“If you see someone sleeping outdoors against their will and without shelter, please help them,” says the city of Zwickau. “No matter what time of year!” If a person in need appears helpless or unresponsive, emergency services should be called. Dresden’s Mayor for Social Affairs, Kristin Klaudia Kaufmann, also asks that people take responsibility for one another. “Anyone who encounters people in a distressing situation should offer support instead of looking away.” This could be as simple as offering a drink or suggesting a cooler place to stay.

In Leipzig alone—Saxony’s largest city—there are an estimated 900 people without housing, according to city officials. “During extreme heat, homeless people are particularly at risk because they often lack a sheltered and cool place to retreat to. They are directly exposed to the sun, hot streets, and high temperatures and cannot retreat to an apartment or an air-conditioned room.”

Emergency shelters and day centers are open to those in need

In Leipzig, overnight shelters are therefore open all day on hot days. There, those affected can rest and cool off, officials say. In addition, the aid bus is on the move in the city in the evenings to offer support.

Leipzig, Dresden, and other cities are drawing special attention these days to their public drinking fountains, where everyone can get water. In addition to emergency shelters, homeless people can find support at day centers in many places. In Dresden, for example, there is the “Schorsch” day center and the Salvation Army’s community café, where food and drinks are served and those affected can also take a shower and cool off.

In Chemnitz, there are four facilities where homeless people can spend the night or stay during the day. According to city officials, they can also find a shady spot and cool drinks there on hot days.
