Schenderlein Moves to the Ministry of Health

Christiane Schenderlein, a CDU politician from Saxony, is no longer Minister of State for Sports in the Chancellor’s Office and is moving to the Ministry of Health as Parliamentary State Secretary. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) announced this in Berlin. It had been known for several days that Schenderlein would not remain at the Chancellery, a decision that had led to widespread discontent among the eastern German state chapters. Her successor has not yet been named.

CDU Lists Schenderlein’s Achievements as State Minister for Sports

The Saxon CDU listed Schenderlein’s achievements in her previous role. She provided important impetus, CDU Secretary General Tom Unger told the German Press Agency. “Major achievements of her work include the Sports Promotion Act, tax relief for volunteers, and, overall, significantly more funding for sports and volunteer work.”

She also ensured that Germany invests more in its elite sports facilities. The federal training centers in Saxony would also benefit from this. The fact that the Elite Sports Agency—as the central point of contact for elite sports funding—will be headquartered in Leipzig is also a major success.

“A Strong Voice from Eastern Germany”

The Saxony CDU also attaches great importance to Schenderlein in her new role. At the Federal Ministry of Health, she will, among other things, help implement important reforms in the areas of statutory health insurance, structural reforms, and long-term care. “Saxon citizens also have legitimate expectations of the federal government in this regard. It is good that, with Christiane Schenderlein, a strong voice from eastern Germany will advocate for their interests.”

The federal government now has a duty to return to substantive work and continue the course of reform for Germany. “Voters will measure the federal government’s success by this,” said Unger.
