The East has a different political mindset than the West. Or does it? In fact, a new study by the polling firm YouGov reveals some noticeable differences in opinion—for example, regarding the role of the AfD, which is viewed more positively in the East. However, many assessments are surprisingly similar—and alarming for policymakers: In both the East and the West, two out of three respondents see democracy as being in danger. Distrust of those in power is overwhelming.
A few weeks before the important state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Berlin, the institute presented a comprehensive questionnaire to nearly 1,600 people in both the East and the West. The direct comparison is particularly interesting. The results are available exclusively to the German Press Agency.
