Leipzig's mayor Burkhard Jung has called far-left demonstrators "crazed delinquents." "What a weekend this city has had again. Unbelievable. Grönemeyer concert, city festival, completely crazed delinquents in Connewitz - it's all part of it," the SPD politician said at a reception for the RB Leipzig team at Leipzig's New City Hall on Sunday. The footballers had won the DFB Cup in Berlin on Saturday night.

On the same evening, there had been clashes between left-wing radicals and the police in the Leipzig district of Connewitz. The occasion was the verdict against the left-wing extremist Lina E. from Wednesday in Dresden. From an initially peaceful demonstration with well over 1500 people, stones, bottles and an incendiary device were thrown at police officers. The forces encircled about 1000 demonstrators. There were arrests. Officers and demonstrators were injured, according to police.
