The Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, has strongly condemned the recent attacks on politicians. "The events in Dresden and elsewhere are abhorrent and leave us stunned," the SPD politician said in Mainz on Saturday. "It is a calculated use of violence to intimidate democrats." Verbal threats turn into "heinous" acts. "It is therefore all the more important that democrats stand together now and strengthen democracy," Dreyer appealed. The SPD MEP Matthias Ecke was beaten up by four strangers in Dresden while putting up election posters and had to undergo surgery.
