This Saturday (from 10.00 a.m.), the CDU, SPD and FDP want to set the course for the Saxon state parliamentary elections on September 1.

CDU, SPD and FDP want to set the personnel course for the Saxon state elections on September 1 this Saturday (from 10.00 a.m.). The CDU/CSU will vote on its state list in Dresden. The SPD will meet in Frankenberg near Chemnitz. The FDP, which is not currently represented in the state parliament, has convened its representative assembly in Döbeln.

The CDU's state leader and Minister President Michael Kretschmer is expected to be first on the state list. The SPD wants to enter the state parliament with Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping as its top candidate. The Liberals had already chosen Dresden FDP city councillor Robert Malorny as their top candidate in May 2023.

The CDU in Saxony became the strongest party in the 2019 state elections with 32.1% of the vote. Since then, it has formed a coalition with the Greens and the SPD, which received 8.6% and 7.7% of the second votes respectively. Polls currently do not indicate that this alliance will continue. Most recently, the CDU was behind or on a par with the AfD in the polls. The former governing party in Saxony, the FDP, has not been represented in the state parliament since 2014.
