Saxony has taken in more and more asylum seekers in recent years. Their number halved with the tightened border controls in 2024. Deportations and voluntary departures increased.

The decline in the number of refugees accepted in Saxony continues. In each of the first five months of this year, there were fewer than in the same period last year. Statistics from the state directorate show a total of 2,439 arrivals at the reception center by the end of May - with a steady monthly decline from 665 in January to 433 in May.

A total of 10,120 arrivals were recorded for last year, and more than twice as many for 2023 at 23,132. The countries of origin of the refugees received in the Free State are Venezuela - Saxony is a reception focus here - Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, India, Russia, Georgia and Libya.

More departures and deportations

The number of those required to leave the country also fell slightly compared to the first quarter of 2024, from 25,358 to 24,458. At the end of April, there were 12,229 people required to leave the country, around half of whom (10,120) had a tolerated stay and 2,109 did not. Last year there were 936 deportations after 845 and 568 in the two previous years.

By the end of May 2025, 349 had been deported, mainly to Georgia, Croatia, Tunisia, Morocco and Turkey, including 107 offenders. Voluntary departures also increased in 2024, from 627 in the previous year to 950. 631 people without the right to asylum returned home voluntarily between the beginning of the year and the end of April.
