The Saxon SPD plans to elect a new executive board in Dresden next weekend and is relying on personnel continuity. The current chairpersons Kathrin Michel and Henning Homann will once again run as a dual leadership. No opposing candidates have yet been announced.
"The state party conference should be both a look back and a look forward," explained Homann in Dresden. The politician referred to a difficult state election campaign and a "painful defeat" in the federal election. "We need to discuss this and draw appropriate conclusions," said Homann.
Party conference in a "serious situation"
In a changing society, it is also important for the SPD to change both in terms of content and organization. The party therefore wants to discuss two key motions that deal with economic recovery and social cohesion, among other things. The party conference is taking place in a serious situation, said Homann. "For the country, for the SPD."
The Lord Mayor of Hoyerswerda, Torsten Ruban-Zeh, and Sophie Koch are running for the posts of deputies. SPD Chairman and Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil is also expected to speak at the state party conference on Saturday afternoon.
"We are facing decisive weeks," emphasized Homann. Next week (June 25), the Saxon state parliament will decide on the state budget. Homann emphasized the need for planning security for local authorities, associations and clubs. However, this will only be the case if the budget is passed before the summer break. The state chairman was cautiously optimistic - there had been numerous talks with the opposition in recent weeks.
The minority government of the CDU and SPD introduced its draft for the 2025/26 double budget to the state parliament at the beginning of April. The coalition is ten votes short of a majority in parliament. It is therefore reliant on support from the opposition.
