According to a survey, only a minority of eligible voters in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia believe that there is a better alternative to the current prime ministers. According to the RTL/ntv trend barometer published on Tuesday, 27 percent in Brandenburg and Saxony were of this opinion, and 36 percent in Thuringia.

The survey was even clearer when comparing the respective AfD leaders directly with the incumbent heads of government. In Thuringia, six percent of eligible voters thought AfD leader Björn Höcke would be better suited than incumbent Bodo Ramelow. In Saxony, only three percent held this view with regard to AfD party and parliamentary group leader Jörg Urban and Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). In Brandenburg, no one in the survey thought that AfD leader Birgit Bessin would be better than Dietmar Woidke (SPD).

The opinion research institute Forsa surveyed 1007 eligible voters in Brandenburg, 1507 in Saxony and 1253 in Thuringia for the RTL/ntv trend barometer from January 7 to 10. The statistical margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 to 3 percentage points, it said. New state parliaments will be elected in the three federal states in September.
