No Photography in the Bathroom – Smart Glasses Cause Uncertainty

The use of smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones is prohibited in Saxony’s swimming pools, but enforcement is difficult. Photography and video recording in these facilities are subject to strict rules and are generally prohibited, according to a survey conducted in Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz. 

The ban on photographing or filming other people is clearly defined and stipulated in the house and pool rules, according to officials in Leipzig. “This includes cameras, cell phones, smartphones, as well as smart glasses and smart pens.”

No incidents so far, but also difficult to enforce

In Dresden’s swimming facilities, bringing cameras into saunas is generally prohibited. According to Dresdner Bäder GmbH, this also includes smart glasses. No such devices have been detected so far. According to the information provided, photos may only be taken in indoor and outdoor pools if no other people are visible in the shots.

A city spokesperson stated that there have been no incidents involving smart glasses at the swimming pools in Chemnitz either. A general ban on smart glasses would also be difficult to enforce, as it is not immediately apparent whether a pair of glasses has recording capabilities or whether those capabilities are actually being used. However, staff have been made aware of the issue.

Concerns about unnoticed recordings on social media

In some municipalities, such as Potsdam, smart glasses are now expressly banned. “These devices allow for the discreet taking of photos and videos without the people involved being able to immediately recognize it,” stated the motion by the Green Party/Volt faction. According to the motion, recordings are increasingly being published on social media without the subjects’ knowledge.
