The 10th State Garden Show in Aue-Bad Schlema opens in around 330 days. Why the organizers are focusing on hillside gardens and what is still being built until then.

Aue-Bad Schlema wants to make the hearts of flower and garden fans beat faster next year with the 2027 State Garden Show. Preparations are in full swing and are well advanced in many areas. For example, a 1.7-kilometre-long pleasure trail has been built for visitors to stroll along. To the right and left of it, raised beds have been laid out where perennials are already in bloom.

The spa park, which is located on a redeveloped uranium mining site, is being upgraded for the flower show. In order to keep the mining legacy safe, there is a thick layer of insulation underground, explains Bernd Birkigt, Managing Director of the State Garden Show. In horticultural terms, this is a major problem. This is why the concept of hillside gardens was devised, which are laid out in various themed areas.

A flower hall is also to be set up in a former railroad station building and children will be able to let off steam in a large adventure playground. From the fall, a self-supporting wooden structure will also be built in the future entrance area as a special eye-catcher.

400,000 visitors expected

Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) was impressed by the progress on the site. What is being created here will be a great asset for the town and the region, she said. "It is very clever not to install something completely new, but to extend and enhance the spa park." This will create something sustainable that will also be used for tourism in the spa town in the years to come.

According to the information provided, around 16 million euros will be invested in the State Garden Show. Originally, it was supposed to open its doors to visitors this year. However, due to the municipality's tight finances, it was initially not possible to award contracts and important investments were delayed as a result. The show was therefore postponed for a year. It will now welcome visitors from April 24 to October 3, 2027. According to Birkigt, around 400,000 visitors are expected.
