The frost of the past few days has given Saxony's winter sports resorts an unusually early start to the season. "Earlier than ever and with more snow than ever", the ski arena in Eibenstock will open on Monday afternoon, according to spokeswoman Anja Uhlmann. In Altenberg in the Eastern Ore Mountains, the ski lifts are due to open on Wednesday.
The operators had used the frosty days since last Thursday to fire up the snow cannons and prepare the slopes. There was also some natural snowfall.
In Saxony's largest ski resort in Oberwiesenthal, however, patience is still required. Snow has already been made there too. However, the lift company announced that the planned opening on December 13 is still expected. On the other side of the border in the Czech ski resort of Klinovec, the winter season is set to begin on Friday (November 28).
