The first confirmed case of bird flu has been reported in Saxony. A dead greylag goose was found on the eastern shore of Lake Markkleeberg near Leipzig a few days ago, according to the district office in Borna. The analyses carried out by the Saxony State Research Institute and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirm an infection with the avian influenza virus H5N1.
No compulsory stabling yet imposed, but recommendation
A general compulsory stabling has not yet been imposed. However, this could be ordered by the veterinary office, taking into account the further course of infection, it was further stated. The situation must be continuously reassessed due to the current dynamic nature of the situation.
However, the Leipzig District Veterinary Office recommends that poultry farmers bring their animals indoors or use covered, wild bird-proof aviaries. This is to prevent contact with wild birds and their droppings as safely as possible. In addition, feed and drinking troughs should be placed in such a way that wild birds cannot reach them.
