Featuring a performance by a music star: Peaceful CSD party in Görlitz

More than 750 people demonstrated for the rights of queer people on Saturday in Görlitz during Christopher Street Day (CSD). The police gave a positive assessment of the event. The day proceeded peacefully throughout, according to the Görlitz Police Department. There were no disturbances or physical altercations.

Among others, the musician Danger Dan performed at the event. On his new album “Keine Angst” (Don’t Be Afraid), which is set to be released on October 2, he sings about his relationship with his ex-boyfriend, among other things. According to his own account, he performed the song “Warum es nicht geklappt hat” in public for the first time.

He said that, compared to his heterosexual relationships, he had never really treated the relationship described in the song as an equal. He felt he owed his ex-boyfriend a love song. “If you will, this is my retroactive coming out right now,” he said at the event.

In light of threats to queer events from Islamists and Nazis, now is the right time for a gay love song: “I don’t just stand in solidarity with you—I am one of you,” he told the *Tagesspiegel*.

Counter-demonstration with about 65 people

According to reports, about 65 people attended a counter-demonstration. Officers identified seven violations of the ban on face coverings there. In addition, the police are investigating one person for incitement to hatred.

According to reports, three violations of the ban on face coverings were recorded during the CSD parade. In one case, officers filed a complaint for malicious damage to property.

In addition to the Görlitz police, riot police, the Chemnitz Police Department, and the Federal Police were on duty. The Federal Police separated the groups at the train station upon arrival and departure. On the Polish side, Polish police forces supported the operation.
