The Capital of Culture program attracts many visitors to the city. The tourism industry is benefiting from this. Contrary to the trend in Saxony, the number of visitors and overnight stays increased up to April.

The Capital of Culture year in Chemnitz is giving the tourism industry there a boost: 23,000 guests came to the city in April, 12.4 percent more than in April 2024, according to the latest data from the State Statistical Office. They booked around 47,000 overnight stays (up 15.8 percent).

The tourism association for Chemnitz and the Zwickau region spoke of an "upswing that the region has rarely seen". Large exhibitions and the "Purple Path" art and sculpture trail attracted visitors from Germany and abroad.

For the first four months as a whole, the increase in visitors in Chemnitz was 5.1 percent compared to the same period last year, with the number of overnight stays rising by 4.7 percent to just under 150,800, contrary to the state trend. In contrast, there were declines of 2.3 and 3.1 percent across Saxony from January to April.

Chemnitz is this year's European Capital of Culture together with the twin city of Nova Gorica - Gorizia on the border between Slovenia and Italy.
