Long-Covid hits young patients particularly hard. A broader care network should relieve the burden on families and improve treatment.

Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken (CDU) wants to create a broad network for the care of children and young people with Long Covid and similar illnesses. There are around 1.5 million people affected in Germany, she said during a visit to Dresden University Hospital. "This is very, very difficult for the families, for those affected, especially when children and young people are affected."

Nationwide project aims to improve treatment

Dresden University Hospital is participating in the nationwide "PEDNET-LC" project, an association of 65 clinics and research institutes that focuses on improving diagnostics and treatment approaches for children and young people with Long-Covid and similar diseases.

The project focuses on 20 interdisciplinary care centers, one of which is in Dresden. Since the beginning of 2025, teams of doctors, psychologists, social pedagogues and nursing staff have been looking after the young patients there, most of whom are between 12 and 18 years old. Patients with symptoms following vaccinations or with ME/CFS, regardless of the trigger, are also treated.

Warken sees "homework"

Warken said that the approach of supporting families, children and young people not only medically but also in their specific living environment requires a broad network that, at best, also reaches doctors in private practice. "There is certainly still some homework to be done." More outreach is needed, more opportunities must be created to use existing medicines outside the approved area of application and research must be driven forward.

Comprehensive care decided in Saxony

In Saxony, it has just been decided to provide comprehensive care for the 300 or so children and adolescents affected as well as for adult patients, added Saxony's Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD). The aim is to create the conditions for a better state of health or even recovery. According to Köpping, this includes schooling for children, visiting opportunities and therapeutic services on site.

The Federal Ministry of Health is funding the project with around 41 million euros until the end of 2028. Around 5.6 million euros have been earmarked for the Dresden site as the deputy project management and coordination office for the care centers. In addition to the University Hospital, the Institute of Medical Informatics and the Biobank Dresden, which are also part of TU Dresden, are also involved.
