More methamphetamine cases - addiction support warns of consequences

The increase in treatment for the use of methamphetamines such as crystal meth is causing concern for Saxony's addiction support services. In the previous year, the number of inpatient treatments rose by 17 percent compared to 2024, according to the 2025 addiction report. According to the report, the consumption of methamphetamine in Saxony remains well above the national average.

The majority of those seeking advice come to counseling with an addiction disorder, according to the report. The consequential damage to the nervous system or the development of schizophrenia caused by years of use is alarming. Efforts to curb the consumption of crystal meth in Saxony, to provide information at an early stage and to support those affected by consumption should not be allowed to slacken.

Alcohol continues to dominate the addiction statistics

However, according to the report, alcohol is still the cause of most treatments. 70 percent of inpatient cases and every second outpatient consultation are related to alcohol problems. With around 25 alcohol-related deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, Saxony ranks 3rd in a nationwide comparison.
