More control is to be exercised at Lake Bockwitz south of Leipzig in order to protect nature. Bathing and swimming is only permitted in a designated bathing area on the lake. Boats are not allowed on the water, nor are windsurfers and stand-up paddlers.

"Despite the designated bathing areas and clearly defined rules, there have recently been numerous breaches of the rules that endanger the lake's fragile ecosystem," said the town of Borna. For this reason, the city's public order service will now be carrying out more checks at the lake. Violations of the rules will be punished.

Lake Bockwitz was created from the former Borna-Ost/Bockwitz open-cast lignite mine. It is part of Leipzig's New Lakeland and is protected as a so-called Fauna-Flora-Habitat area (FFH).
