An investment worth millions, 49 berths and a new hotspot for water sports: what the Leipzig city harbor has in store for tourists and locals.

Leipzig has a new central point of contact for water tourism: Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung and Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer have opened the Leipzig City Harbour.

The result is nothing less than the "new heart of the water tourism network in Leipzig's New Lake District with enormous appeal for Leipzig and the region", emphasized Jung (SPD).

The city harbour will become the central gateway to this special water world, said Minister President Kretschmer (CDU). "It strengthens tourism development, creates impetus for the economy and makes Leipzig even better known as a liveable and modern city on the water."

The area of around 13,800 square meters near the city centre includes a harbour basin of almost 4,000 square meters with 49 berths for motorized boats as well as moorings for canoes and 90 bicycle parking spaces. A pedestrian bridge and barrier-free infrastructure are also included.

According to the city, the construction costs amounted to around 15.67 million euros. Around 90 percent of the costs were financed by federal and state funds. The preparatory work began in November 2021, with the main construction work starting in September 2023.
