Whether shaped like a hedgehog on a buffet or simply used as a topping for a roll, many meat lovers swear by Mett. In Saxony, this raw ground meat has now set a world record. In Siebenlehn (Mittelsachsen district), a Mett roll of superlative proportions was prepared for the opening of a furniture store: with plenty of butter, 50 kilograms of Mett, onion rings, and parsley. Record adjudicator Lisa Nowakowski from the Record Institute for Germany (RID) calls this a first-of-its-kind record. Record hunters had not previously attempted a Mett roll, though they had tried similar snacks. For example, the northern German cities of Rostock and Bremen competed this year for the title of the world’s longest fish sandwich. In April, Rostock set the record at 42.37 meters; in September, Bremen baked a sandwich just under 52 meters long and topped it with matjes herring. To make things a bit more challenging for Mett fans, the RID set this mark as the minimum size for the longest Mett roll as well. And that mark was significantly surpassed in Saxony. To achieve this, 40 baguettes were joined together with raw dough and then baked using a blowtorch, explains Nowakowski. The whole thing was then topped in the traditional way and measured at the end. According to the record judges, the giant Mettbrötchen was exactly 59.19 meters long. After the verification, spectators were allowed to eat it for free. The record in this new category was confirmed by a certificate and will now be entered into the RID registry. The institute hopes for lively competition in the future, it says. Who will challenge the Saxons? Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de). All rights reservedMett roll is more than 59 meters long
