German Hiking Day Invites Participants to Cross-Border Hikes

Hikers from all over Germany will gather in Oberwiesenthal starting this Thursday for German Hiking Day. Numerous hikes will be offered on both sides of the German-Czech border through the weekend. This allows people to experience what Europe can mean in everyday life, said Michael Ermrich, president of the German Hiking Association. “Cross-border hikes in particular show that trails connect people.” The Hiking Day is an important gathering for clubs to exchange ideas, meet one another, and work together on the future of hiking.

Numerous hikes are being offered around the Fichtelberg and the neighboring Keilberg (Klinovec). The thematic focus also includes the mining history of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří mining region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Hiking Event Takes on a European Dimension

This year, the German Hiking Day coincides with the European hiking festival Eurorando, which kicked off in the region last weekend. This connection gives the Hiking Day a special European dimension, emphasized Oberwiesenthal Mayor Jens Benedict.

The highlight will be a parade on Saturday from Boží Dar (Gottesgab) in the Czech Republic to Oberwiesenthal. There, visitors can look forward not only to a traditional mountain parade for the finale, but also to a music program, a fire show, and a moonlight ride on the Fichtelbergbahn.
