Bus line, European city ticket, bridge park: Görlitz and Zgorzelec are already linked by several projects across the German-Polish border. Another ambitious project is now being added.

The district heating supply for Görlitz and the neighboring Polish town of Zgorzelec is to be completely converted to renewable energy sources by 2030. The cross-border energy project entitled "United Heat" has been planned and prepared since 2020. Construction of the first section across the Neisse will begin on Tuesday (March 31) with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony - in the presence of prominent politicians from both countries. Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) and Poland's Energy Minister Milosz Motyka are expected to attend.

According to Görlitzer Stadtwerke AG, "United Heat" will be the first climate-neutral, cross-border district heating network between Germany and Poland. The EU has already pledged grants totaling around 38 million euros for the project. The federal government intends to provide more than 81 million euros. With the participation of the Eon and Veolia groups, a total of around 200 million euros is to be invested to save up to 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year in the future.

"Energy history in the middle of Europe"

For the Mayor of Görlitz, Octavian Ursu (CDU), "United Heat" is more than just an infrastructure project. It is an outstanding example of the many years of cooperation between the two cities, which officially declared themselves a European City in 1998. "Görlitz and Zgorzelec are writing energy history in the middle of Europe," said Ursu.

According to Stadtwerke, the first construction phase for "United Heat" is planned to connect the heat generation site in the Königshufen district of Görlitz with Zgorzelec via a 3.8-kilometer pipeline. In addition, four previously separate district heating areas on the German side are to be connected. In the end, the cross-border heating infrastructure is to have a total length of twelve kilometers.

Joint venture planned

New houses could be connected to the network along the planned supply route in order to replace old heating systems with modern, climate-neutral generation technologies. New plants are to be built at various locations on both sides of the Neisse to generate 100 percent heat from renewable energy sources and feed it into the grid.

A joint company is to build and operate the cross-border pipeline. The establishment of the German-Polish joint venture is currently being prepared, according to the Görlitz municipal utilities.
