From this week, water will no longer gush from the 30 public drinking fountains in Leipzig. The winter break has also begun in Chemnitz. Dresdeners can quench their thirst for a little longer.

Saxony's drinking fountains are going into their winter break with the start of the frost period. Leipzig's waterworks will turn off a total of 30 fountains in the city and surrounding areas over the course of the week, according to the municipal company. To protect against frost damage, the pipes will be emptied and parts of the control system for water withdrawal at the push of a button will be removed.

The Vienna fountain in Petersstraße will also be given a protective wooden enclosure due to its location at the Christmas market. The two giant mobile fountains on Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and Simson-Platz will be moved to their winter quarters.

In Dresden, the season lasts a few days longer. The eleven fountains there will continue to provide water until next week. The start of the 2026 season is planned for April in Leipzig and Dresden.

The six drinking fountains in Chemnitz have been offline since October 9. They will go back into operation next year for Water Day on March 22.
