Recycling instead of throwing away: East German textile companies are focusing on new solutions to use used textiles as a raw material. What drives the industry and what developments are currently causing it problems.

The East German textile industry sees recycling as a major future market. There are currently millions of tons of used textiles that are not being used as raw materials, said Thomas Lindner, Chairman of the Board of the Association of the North-East German Textile and Clothing Industry (vti). When developing new textiles, their recyclability must be considered from the outset. "The aim must be that something new can be made from old textiles." Many companies are working on this in collaboration with research institutes in the region.

Around 1,500 exhibitors from 52 countries are reportedly exhibiting at the Techtextil trade fair in Frankfurt am Main this week. It is the leading international trade fair for technical textiles and nonwovens. This sector is regarded as the focus of the textile industry in eastern Germany. According to the vti, technical textiles account for more than half of its turnover. The association has around 110 members, mainly in Saxony and Thuringia.

Car industry crisis hits textile industry

The industry is currently struggling with a number of problems. Many companies are feeling the effects of the sales crisis in the automotive industry. There are numerous textiles in cars, from seat covers and headliners to interior upholstery, explained Lindner. Added to this is a "disastrous development" in the textile retail sector. And the global political situation is increasingly calling into question the supply of important raw materials such as fibers and chemicals. On the one hand, certain dyes and preliminary products are no longer available; on the other, many things are becoming more expensive to buy.

"Under these conditions, I think growth is out of the question," said Lindner when asked for a forecast for the industry this year.

East German companies inform about new developments

According to the information provided, 26 companies and institutes from the association are represented at the Techtextil trade fair in Frankfurt. This includes Norafin from Mildenau in the Ore Mountains. It will be presenting nonwoven solutions made from recycled fibers as well as ecological nonwovens made from flax, hemp, cellulose and sheep's wool. The company Vowalon from Treuen in the Vogtland region will be presenting innovative outdoor materials that are particularly hard-wearing and weather-resistant. And the company C.F. Weber from Spitzkunnersdorf in eastern Saxony is pushing ahead with its move away from so-called perpetual chemicals (PFAS). From 2027, it plans to offer its entire product range free of such substances.
