People have been talking about electrifying the Dresden-Görlitz rail line for more than twenty years, but little has happened. Now, politicians from eastern Saxony want to step up the pressure.

Politicians from Eastern Saxony, together with the Ministry of Infrastructure, are making a new push to finally make progress on the electrification of the Dresden-Görlitz rail line. At the end of June, a cross-party parliamentary group was formed to advocate for the project at the federal level, according to the Görlitz District Office. Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU) has taken on the role of patron.

“It’s not a pretty picture we have to paint: People have been talking about this line for more than twenty years,” Kraushaar explained. Yet it remains unelectrified to this day. It also remains a stumbling block for cross-border traffic to Poland.

So far, only “potential need”

According to the district administration, the route is currently classified in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan only as a “potential need.” The cost-benefit ratio—last assessed in 2018—is considered too poor. The parliamentary group now intends to advocate for the route to be upgraded to “urgent need.” The argument is that significant changes have occurred since 2018, and a reassessment could yield a better result.

The route is not only important for connecting Upper Lusatia to the state capital, Dresden. It could also serve as a key corridor to Eastern Europe. As early as 2003, a German-Polish agreement called for a fully electrified route between Wrocław, Görlitz, and Dresden. Poland has long since implemented this; Germany has not.
