Heat damage is bringing Leipzig's trams to a standstill. The LVB is asking the public for help in scraping out the joint sealant. Sturdy shoes, a safety vest, and a putty knife are required.

Since Saturday, virtually no trams have been running in Leipzig due to heat damage to the tracks. Now, the Leipzig Public Transportation Authority (LVB) is asking the public for help in scraping out the worn-out joint sealant. “Leipzig sticks together. Now we need you,” the LVB writes on its Facebook page.

LVB employees are doing everything they can to repair the damage, and the public has offered numerous offers of help. The cleanup effort will begin at the tram hub at the Goerdelerring stop at 2:00 p.m.

Anyone who wants to lend a hand should wear sturdy shoes and bring something to protect their knees. Work gloves, a safety vest, and a putty knife would also be helpful.

Heat damage has largely paralyzed tram service

According to LVB, the high temperatures caused the joint sealant for asphalt and concrete to seep into switches and tracks at many points along the tram network, where it clumped together. Since then, regular tram service has not been possible. On Monday, one line resumed service, but it bypasses the inner-city loop.
