The district heating supply for Görlitz and the neighboring Polish town of Zgorzelec is to be completely converted to renewable energy sources by 2030. The cross-border energy project entitled "United Heat" has been planned and prepared since 2020. Construction of the first section across the Neisse will begin on Tuesday (March 31) with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony - in the presence of prominent politicians from both countries. Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) and Poland's Energy Minister Milosz Motyka are expected to attend.
According to Görlitzer Stadtwerke AG, "United Heat" will be the first climate-neutral, cross-border district heating network between Germany and Poland. The EU has already pledged grants totaling around 38 million euros for the project. The federal government intends to provide more than 81 million euros. With the participation of the Eon and Veolia groups, a total of around 200 million euros is to be invested to save up to 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year in the future.
