Who will keep village family practices open in the future? In Saxony, 29 women and 11 men are beginning their medical studies with a special commitment.

Interest in the so-called rural doctor quota remains high in Saxony. All 40 available spots have been filled, the State Directorate announced. This means that 29 women and 11 men will have the opportunity to begin medical school in the 2026/2027 winter semester—regardless of the Numerus Clausus.

According to the information provided, a total of 100 applicants, including 66 women and 34 men, applied for the 40 spots. The selection process included a written application as well as in-person interviews, which took place in early June. 6.5 percent of medical school spots are allocated through the rural doctor quota.

The selected applicants commit to working for at least ten years as general practitioners in regions where a particular need has been identified, following their studies and specialty training. The study locations are Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz.
