Heavy smokers between the ages of 50 and 75 can now undergo lung cancer screening via computed tomography at the expense of the statutory health insurance system in Saxony. The first approvals for CT screening have now been granted, according to the State Directorate of Saxony (LDS). The goal is to detect tumors as early as possible and improve the chances of recovery.
Until now, CT scans were only used when there was already a specific suspicion of disease. This was due to legal requirements, as every examination involves radiation exposure. “With the approval of radiation protection authorities, this new form of lung cancer early detection can begin in Saxony,” explained LDS President Béla Bélafi. The basis for this is a lung cancer early detection regulation issued by the Federal Ministry for the Environment.
