It was exactly what Dresden coach Thomas Stamm had hoped for: No nail-biter, but rather a dominant performance that sends the Saxons through to the next round.

Effortless and efficient: Dynamo Dresden easily disposed of SV Westfalia Rhynern in the cup and is eagerly awaiting the draw for the second round on September 5. The 6-0 (5-0) score certainly reflected the gap between the second-division team and the regional-league side, which was making its DFB Cup debut and didn’t have a single player on its roster who had ever gained any cup experience.

Jonas Sterner (8'), Niklas Hauptmann (17'), Vincent Vermeij (30th min.), Ben Bobzien (34th min.), Kaan Inanoglu (39th min.), and Robert Wagner (54th min.) scored in front of 6,702 spectators in Münster, where Rhynern had to play due to its own stadium being too small.

No Rotation at Dynamo

Dynamo coach Thomas Stamm made it clear from the lineup that he takes the fourth-division newcomers very seriously. The team that had played the second-division matches this season—and secured its first win of the season against Darmstadt 98 a week ago—took the field. With the exception of Christoph Daferner, who was sidelined with calf muscle issues, the bench was fully staffed as usual.

And from the very first minute, Dynamo made it clear that they weren’t willing to take any risks. The high press completely stifled the underdog, who had actually intended to play boldly and aggressively. When Sterner was able to head the ball unchallenged off the second corner just eight minutes in, any resistance—if there had been any—was broken. The Saxons combined to score goals two through five before halftime, with new signing Inanoglu also getting to celebrate his first goal in a Dynamo jersey.

Rhynern failed to create anything until the halftime whistle, as the Dresden team remained highly focused and nipped all attacking efforts in the bud. The hosts fired their first—completely harmless—shot on Tim Schreiber’s goal in the 47th minute. The Oberliga champions earned their first corner kick in the 50th minute.

Dynamo slowed the pace slightly in the second half but never ran the risk of being caught off guard. On the contrary: Wagner also got to add his name to the score sheet after a clever feint by Vermeij. You could tell the Dynamo players were enjoying the game, even though they were mostly playing from a standing start after the 6-0 lead.
