An Argentine, rather than a North German, is expected to lead RB to new heights in the Champions League. Werner is history; Gomez’s buddy Demichelis is supposed to turn things around.

According to Tatjana Haenni, RB Leipzig should be approachable, relatable, and open. That’s how Oliver Mintzlaff’s successor as head of the Bundesliga club described her vision when she took office in January. Currently, the club is far from that—as was evident during Ole Werner’s departure.

In the Champions League, Oliver Mintzlaff and Jürgen Klopp want to compete among the elite. That’s why they’re looking for a fresh start. Now the fans are waiting for the media reports to be confirmed and for Martín Demichelis to become the new coach.

More passion and flair with Demichelis?

Although the strategic work of sporting director Marcel Schäfer—in harmony with the cool-headed Werner, who was very calm in his analysis—was often praised, this collaboration is now a thing of the past. Demichelis is apparently the coach who is expected to bring more passion and flair to the team.

The 45-year-old former Bayern Munich defender previously coached RCD Mallorca and is now expected to make a splash with RB in the Champions League. A transfer fee of around 2.5 million euros is reportedly due—thanks to an exit clause.

Klopp is considered a key driving force behind the upcoming signing—even if he doesn’t want to comment on the name. “I’m not going to get involved in speculation right now. Anything there is to say about this comes from Leipzig,” the 59-year-old said during his appearance for Telekom. The global soccer chief also left the explanation for the split with Werner to the officials at Leipzig’s Cottaweg. Speaking into the Magenta TV microphone, he said: “We then thought about what that might look like given the pressure we’re facing. Then the decision was made in Leipzig to make the change.”

Gomez and Demichelis once played together at FC Bayern

The manner of Werner’s resignation came as a surprise. That’s because the season review—announced after Werner’s return from vacation—took place ahead of schedule last Tuesday. “We act in an advisory capacity as the global team. We were involved in the decision-making process. We analyzed the season,” said Klopp.

Even Schäfer, who had long been considered a Werner supporter, was ultimately forced to take action. With the triple burden in the Champions League, “further development in terms of content and a changed approach” are necessary. No one would have thought the man with 1.95 points—the best RB coach in Bundesliga history—capable of this.

So, Demichelis now? The Argentine once played alongside Mario Gomez—now Technical Director of the global RB Soccer Team—at FC Bayern (2009–2010). Both were also on the field on May 22, 2010, when the German record champions lost 0–2 to Inter Milan in Madrid.
