Despite being relegated from the 3. Liga, FC Erzgebirge Aue is able to retain its longest-serving player. Following striker Marcel Bär, the northeastern regional club has also extended the contract of veteran Martin Männel, the club announced. However, the 38-year-old goalkeeper is no longer the undisputed starter. “But when the team needs him and all his experience, he’ll be there, just as he has been for the past 18 years,” said Aue’s squad manager Steffen Ziffert.
Männel is expected to remain with the club after his playing career ends. He has worn the “Veilchen” jersey since 2008, was recently voted into the all-time team, and has stood between the posts in 596 competitive matches for FCE to date. Most recently in the 2-0 state cup final victory at FSV Zwickau. He led Aue to the 2nd Bundesliga twice.
“Even though the sting of relegation runs deep, I’ve already experienced a major upheaval twice. It always offers an opportunity as well. Making a contribution once again in a situation that’s new to me as well is a major challenge,” said Männel, who is looking forward to the many East German derbies.
