The future of international Timo Werner may be more open than ever following his premature exit this season. "Tottenham basically have their hand on it," said RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose. Werner is on loan from the Saxons to the London club until the end of the season, but Spurs can sign the attacker permanently for 17 million euros. Coach Ange Postecoglou had always spoken positively about Werner and hinted at him staying.

Due to the break of several weeks caused by Werner's thigh injury, no decision is expected to be made soon. "We won't decide until the end of the season," said Postecoglou. "Do we have to fill other gaps and where does Timo fit into this strategy? We have to discuss the strategy and then decide. I think he was very good with us."

Often in the starting eleven, few goals

Werner made 13 appearances in the Premier League, starting ten times. His tally includes two goals and three assists. "He has said that he feels very comfortable, that he arrived relatively quickly," said Rose. "What he expected from the loan and, of course, what we expected from it has paid off. Everything has been good so far, even though it's of course a shame that he's out injured."

Werner's participation in the European Championships is now a thing of the past. A nomination for the home tournament from June 14 to July 14 was another reason for the winter change. However, the 28-year-old was already absent from the last training courses and probably had little chance of being nominated.

In the DFB hierarchy, at least Niclas Füllkrug, Kai Havertz, Deniz Undav and Maximilian Beier are currently ahead of Werner in the center forward position. His last of 57 international appearances dates back to March 28, 2023, when he played 80 minutes in the 3-2 draw against Belgium. Werner missed the 2022 World Cup due to a syndesmosis.
