As his players were still hesitating briefly as to whether the match point for the volleyball double would really be given to them, Suhl's coach Laszlo Hollosy was already running into their arms to join in the jubilation. After the first hugs, the Hungarian threw his arms over his head in disbelief. "This is more than a dream," the coach of the surprise team told Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk after the decisive 3-0 win over Dresdner SC to clinch the championship in the Wolfsgrube sports hall at home.
In 2020, Hollosy came to Thuringia to shape the "Wolfsrudel" into a play-off team in line with President Alexander Mantlik's vision. Now, after winning the cup, the Suhl women have won the first championship in the club's history. "A small team like VfB Suhl - if you compare our budget with that of Dresden, Stuttgart or Schwerin - and we win the cup and the championship. That's incredible," said Hollosy.
There was golden confetti and a champagne shower from the coach for his team led by captain Roosa Laakonen and league top scorer Monika Brancuska. The Suhl players then quickly made their way to their loyal fans with the championship trophy. The 1,800 fans had once again turned the small hall into a "nightmare" for their opponents, as Hollosy put it. "The energy in this hall is insane," Dresden's coach Alexander Waibl also told the Thüringer Allgemeine ahead of the game.
