1. FC Magdeburg suffered a setback in the third league game for interim duo Petrik Sander and Pascal Ibold. At VfL Bochum, the team from the city on the Elbe lost 2-0 (0-1) in front of 26,000 spectators. Kjell Wätjen (41') and Gerrit Holtmann (60') scored for VfL, Magdeburg's Falko Michel missed a penalty (81'). FCM remain in 18th place with seven points, three points behind the non-relegation places.
"The injury-related substitution of Tobias Müller disrupted our order a little. You simply can't concede a goal like that, then it's 0-0 going into the break," said Sander on Sky and praised his team: "The boys didn't collapse - if the penalty makes it 2-1, it will certainly be tight again."
Before the game, FCM sporting director Otmar Schork said on Sky that Sander would "definitely stay and the medium-term future will also show how things will continue". FCM dominated the opening quarter of an hour, Bochum only then began to attack - and Farid Alfa-Ruprecht failed to hit the crossbar (17').
Bochum exploit Magdeburg's weaknesses
The hosts now created more chances and also had the better ones. Bochum took the lead from an innocuous scene: Wätjen picked the ball off Marcus Mathisen's foot on the halfway line, ran alone towards goalkeeper Dominik Reimann and converted with ease.
After the break, Magdeburg initially produced a few half-chances, but then Bochum became more dominant again, first failing to score three times (58') before Holtmann fired in from the edge of the box after a corner. Magdeburg changed offensively, but continued to lack penetration, and Michel also hit the crossbar with a penalty (81').
Table leaders Paderborn as the next hurdle
The tasks do not get any easier for Magdeburg. The Elbe club will host league leaders Paderborn on Sunday next week and are doomed to score points there too. However, without Baris Atik, who saw his fifth yellow card around the penalty decision.
