Sören Gonther has been appointed Managing Director Sport at second-division soccer club Dynamo Dresden as of January 1. He succeeds Thomas Brendel, who was relieved of his duties at the beginning of November. The 39-year-old Gonther was most recently managing director at KSV Hessen Kassel and worked as a pundit for the TV channel "Sky".
With Gonther, a Dynamo insider is returning to Dresden. He played for the Black & Yellows from 2017 to 2019 before moving to arch-rivals FC Erzgebirge Aue. He played a total of 294 second division games, including for SC Paderborn and FC St. Pauli. Gonther had already submitted his application when the position was advertised in 2024. At the time, however, the supervisory board opted for Brendel.
Focus on further development of the club
"In Kassel, he made a significant contribution to the professionalization of the club and, among other things, further developed the link between the youth and professional areas. He has an excellent network and knows our club from his time as a professional player. He is familiar with the current and upcoming tasks and will put his experience, his soccer expertise and his leadership skills at the service of the sports community with immediate effect," said Dynamo's supervisory board chairman Michael Ziegenbalg.
Gonther wants to further develop Dynamo, currently bottom of the Bundesliga 2. "Together, we have the big goal of keeping Dynamo in the Bundesliga and further stabilizing ourselves in the Bundesliga 2. The sporting side of the club, with the youth academy and the women's teams, promises great development potential for the future, which we want to continue to promote. The task now is to make good decisions in our cooperation," he said in a club statement.
