A catastrophic defensive performance thoroughly spoiled Dynamo Dresden's second league comeback after 1176 days. The Saxons paid the price at SpVgg Greuther Fürth and lost 2:3 (1:2). Noel Futkeu scored after just 24 seconds - no Dynamo professional had touched the ball at that point.
After Felix Klaus made it 2-0 (9th minute), Christoph Daferner (11th minute) scored the equalizer. After the break, it was Futkeu again (51) who restored the two-goal gap. Claudio Kammerknecht (74) only scored to close the gap.
"It was the first ever second division game for many of us. Perhaps we were a little nervous. As the game went on, we realized that we could keep up and play great soccer," said Kammerknecht.
Dynamo coach Thomas Stamm relied on tried-and-tested players, but also started three new signings from the beginning with Konrad Faber, Alexander Rossipal and Nils Fröling. As expected, midfield engine Niklas Hauptmann started on the bench. After his appendix operation, he is not yet at 100 per cent.
Bird-wild covering behavior in the opening phase
Before Dynamo knew it, they were already behind. Futkeu converted a cross from Reno Münz completely unchallenged at the far post. The visitors had a chance to equalize through Daferner (2nd) virtually on the counter-attack, but Pelle Boevink managed to scramble the ball out of the corner.
After nine minutes, when the score was practically a carbon copy of the first goal conceded, the visitors had to fear for their safety. But hope was rekindled when the goal was headed home.
"We know that we have room for improvement in defense, and we're working on that. The opening phases of both halves with the goals showed that we have nothing to do with the league, at least at this stage," said coach Stamm on Sky.
Dynamo seize momentum after scoring the equalizer
From then on, Dynamo took control of the game. Fröling could have equalized after 19 minutes when Philipp Ziereis misplaced the ball in his own penalty area, but he was denied by Boevink. The game flattened out after that. Dynamo dominated proceedings, but had to be happy not to go into the break 3-1 down. After a corner in stoppage time, Ziereis headed onto the crossbar.
Defence still asleep after the break
Whoever thought that Dynamo had learned from the defensive errors of the opening quarter of an hour was wrong after the break. Once again, Fürth were able to dance past the entire Dynamo backline unhindered in the person of Futkeu and slot home.
No, because Dresden rallied again and created chance after chance - also thanks to good interchanges by Stamm. Kammerknecht's follow-up with a shot from distance gave them hope once again, especially as the hosts hardly managed to relieve the pressure after that. However, the opportunities that presented themselves were not played out well to the end. Daferner (57) hit the post, but that was it.
